The additional complexities of 64 bit memory operations may actually 
cause a loss of performance.  Here's a page that did some benchmarks 
which shows some difference, but their disclaimer is the same as mine.  
You have to read between the lines a bit.

These tests were preformed on Sun OS with a 64 bit OS and 64 bit 
hardware architecture, which came to slightly different conclusions.
