You're confusing the MX and the ME.  The MX meter turns on when half 
depressing the shutter button, it stayed on when the film advance is in 
the stand off position, and then half depressing the shutter release.  
The MX had no main power switch but did have a shutter lock collar. By 
the way you can turn off the meter by locking the shutter, or pushing 
the film advance back in.
