Of course they did something dodgy: they backwards-engineered the protocol and tested that it worked with the current bodies at the time it was introduced. Pentax, being the one creating the K10D, could test it for operation with the other two existing flash units and modify the design in the new body to make sure it worked. I hate to step in to Sigma's defense as I think their quality control is out of bounds to begin with, but if you accept buying third party products that are being backwards-engineered in the first place, from that perspective this is a post-facto upgrade to the 500 DG Super flash unit.
