I format and error check my CF and SD cards on my PC, I've never had a
problem. The in camera format isn't a "real" format, it can mask card
problems as it's not a thorough format.

The only card that I've seen suffer adversely was an Olympus xD card,
it has non-restorable data on the card and a PC format/write crash
will render it unusable in the camera (but fine for any other
purpose), POS system.
