But isnt the purpose of using the jpeg output
option of the camera so you can just go
straight to a print lab and print the jpegs
without having to do any digital processing
of the images on a PC or laptop? It sounds
like you cant do RAW and get instant **USABLE**
results which is what I meant.

anything digital, jpeg, raw, uncle Tom Cobbley or otherwise, without
some digital processing, by definition. 

It doesn't matter if the file format is proprietary provided the camera
supports a widely-used interface such as PictBridge if you want to print
on minilab printers etc.

Even so, you've tried to shift the goalposts. In the statement below, to
which I replied, you merely talked about instant results, and you
mentioned Photoshop tweaking. But there are plenty of other applications
than Photoshop which can read raw files and provide perfectly acceptable
results quickly with no tweaking. The particular example I was thinking
of, and which I use, is Lightroom.
