My work laptop has the same setup and I'm running an external Dell 19" 
off the DVI port on the base station (Dual monitor config). The one 
caveat is that most good LCD's are DVI-input and most laptops are VGA 
output rather than DVI. You can still find a fair number of dual-input 
panels though (including the Dell 19")

The Intel graphics use system RAM, and cause a system speed hit (The 
system can't access that bank of RAM when the video is, and vice versa) 
but is quite capable of driving 2 monitors at such low resolutions.
