Quite often, politicians make decisions based on what will get them re-elected, which may not have much to do with right or wrong, and the courts don't necessarily base their decisions on the facts of the case, or they pick and choose which facts suit the desired result. I suspect that this is more common in places where the judiciary and legal officials (sherrifs, prosecutors and their ilk) have to stand for election.
