Nope, I've never had a metal shaving appear in a lens, although I've  
had dust and other debris in lenses. I would disassemble that lens  
and remove the sliver. If it's a manual focus 50, you might as well  
try to do it yourself, as the price of a disassembly and cleaning  
would exceed the cost of the lens. If you're not comfortable with  
that kind of work and it's an F or an FA lens, you might want to have  
a pro technician do it. Figure on spending about sixty or seventy  
dollars US. While you may not think it's causing problems, there is  
undoubtedly some diffusion even when the piece doesn't actually  
appear in your pics.
