Within the US, if you are a working photographer, you are entitled
to a camera bag in addition to the normal carry-on allowance.  You are
also entitled to have any film (whatever that is :-) hand inspected.

Note that although you are entitled to these privileges, you are
quite likely to run into TSA employees who aren't aware of this.
In that case just (politely) ask to see the supervisor.
I'd recommend allowing extra time, though - exception processing
can be slow.  Missing your flight while arguing about what you
are allowed to carry in the cabin isn't really a good tradeoff.

Personally I like to use a Pelican 1510 as a carryon camera case.
It's sturdy enough to protect my cameras should I be forced to
check them (although that's never happened yet).  The larger 1620
has made several air trips in the cargo hold.  It's beginning to
look a little worse for wear by now, but the contents have always
come through unscathed.
