Well, as far as I know, the only other way to do this, i.e. one photosite per three colors, is through some type of dynamic filter. But that would necessitate cycling through the colors and reading/clearing the sensor each cycle, which would 1)make it more noisy OR 2) require 3x the shutter time to get the same exposure.
