I was not really following this thread as I experienced absolutely no
problem with any of my SD cards.
Then, by accident, I encountered the following Japanese site that is talking
about the fake ExtreamIII and ultraII, how the fake looks and how to
distinguish etc.

http://allabout.co.jp/computer/digitalcamera/closeup/CU20061001A/

This is in Japanese and straddles on 4 pages (click thru "next page" but in
Japanese :-).

The first page describes the package and how difficult it is to detect fakes
but there are subtle differences from originals.

2nd page; side by side comparison. Right hand is fake. Again, very
difficult to detect.

3rd page; Performance comparison. Read speed is very slow. Write speed
was not that slow in this particular case but many reports of slow write
speed as well. It is suspected that the quality of flash memory is erratic
anyway.

4th page; How to detect fakes. It says simple. Property indicated on PC
card is not SanDisk. It shows Hyperstone, a well know fake maker.
The problem is that this is not indicated when using USB card readers.

They said that Chinese brokers are very active in selling these fakes
particularly in auction sites. SanDisk Japan is of course very concerned
about this and pursuing criminal investigation. Their recommendation is not
to buy cards that are very low price, and with no mark or guarantee by
retailers (of reputation).

Hope above makes sense.

Ken
