Nowhere in your description above do you mention a carrier that does
what I need/want to do quite often:

- carry a laptop, camera and two to three small lenses, and a
complement of small notebook, 5x7 portfolio book, etc
- carry a laptop, two-three 9x12 portfolio books, small bits and pieces
- carry two-three 9x12 portfolio books and the camera/two-three lens
shooting kit

or any number of combinations of gear, both larger and smaller, while
being able to walk and ride public transit for several hours at a
stretch without fatigue. That's why I have a selection of bags to
work with.

If all I was concerned about was having a large hard case to move a
big lump of gear around and a shooting bag to carry just one or two
variations of the camera kit, yes, a Pelican and a Domke F3x would do
the job very nicely.
