for one winter in the 60s we lived in a remote cottage on Anglesey. We awoke one morning to find snow drifting higher than our front door. After digging us out my father tried to drive us to school (in one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_A30), but we got no more than a few yards before he gave up. As I recall we were off school for about 2 weeks. Even in relatively recent years when I worked in Yorkshire it was not uncommon to be cut off in quite major towns and not be able to get to work.
