I'm pretty sure all of the current generation Epsons are printing at
5760x1440 DPI for their dot pattern, with 1.5 picoliter droplets.
Which means they'll all be about the same. My older-generation Stylus
Photo 820 will only print at 2880x720 DPI, with 4 picoliter droplets.
And it produces excellent prints with good tones. The print heads are
basically the same between the narrow and wide carriage printers. It's
just a question of how wide the paper feed is, and how far the head
can move back and forth.

The big difference between the UltraChrome inks and the dye (Claria)
inks is the composition of the coloring elements. The UltraChromes are
pigment-based, and the Clarias are a liquid dye-based ink. The
UltraChrome inks are more permanent, and change color less when viewed
under different lights. There are some differences as to which papers
will work with dye vs. pigment inks, but the paper manufacturers will
specify that. Epson has a chart on their website with a rundown of
what papers work with what printers.
