In terms of the tones, I probably would have done something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=364911524&size=o Truth be told, this image doesn't do anything for me. There are too many elements to make it a cohesive. I think you would have done well to get a little closer and take pics of the vines and that huge knot on their own.
