I've run into this before.
The wording in the literature is awkward.
By lens, the converters are marked
x - not usable,
o - usable, and
o* - better performance can be obtained
This should have been translated
"Better performance will be obtained!"

With the A*300/2.8, the 1.4xS and 2xS are marked o - usable
The 1.4xL and 2xL are marked o* - better performance can be obtained!

With the F*600/4, the 1.4xS is marked x - not usable
the 2xS is marked o - usable
the 1.4xL and 2xL are both marked o*...better performance can be obtained.

As far as I can tell,the "L" converters are best for the exotic glass.
