I just did a Q&D shot of my living room at ISO1600, with 1 stop of under exposure keyed into the exposure comp. The results were really noisy, so I ran the file through a heavy handed noise reduction. It doesn't look quite real anymore, but if I had to shoot that way, I expect I would spend more time perfecting the NR I applied. Kodak (through Applied Science Fiction) has a PS plug in called Digital Gem, which works surprisingly well for removing noise.
