Well first of all, it should be Re: "mics and Mac's" if yer 
abbreviating "microphones" ;-)

But you probably ought to have a look at Audacity. Free, open-source 
sound editing software: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Available for Mac/Windows/Linux.

Most laptop computers have a microphone input. If not, you'll have to 
get yourself a cheap pre-amp and an M-Audio Transit 
(http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Transit-main.html) to go in via 
a USB port (which will also give you better quality recording than 
using the computer sound card's pre-amp and A/D converter). That's 
basically the setup I use for my music recordings at home.
