It's more a case of using a single case to hold & organize all your 
cards, rather than having a slew of cards in those little plastic cases 
(or sans case) floating around the bag.

Also with 2 cases, or a dual-sided case you can quickly and simply 
differentiate full and empty cards.

Same reason people have film bags. The protection part is mostly 
irrelevant IMHO.
