A fellow subscriber to the DPReview.com mailing list was in town on Sunday so we met in San Francisco and had a good afternoon's meander through the Golden Gate Park/De Young Museum neighborhood. Both of us noted that there are probably 3-4x as many SLR cameras in the hands of tourists compared to compacts for the first time in 20 or more years, far more than even a year ago.
