We have a rather active dog club in my community. They have formal "dog meet dog" meetings every week, and some informal meetings too. So getting the dog socialised shouldn't a problem. They also arrange good puppy training classes, with dedicated instructors. We will join one all three of us, me, Marit and Frøya (Frøya is a mythological name, she was the god of motherhood).
The first thing I'll do is to time the enablement with the start of one of those classes. It is almost like expecting a baby, there is so much to think about. We where warned about HD/AD, lately that has become an issue here, I was told. I'll do a lot of research looking for a serious breeder. I also need to look for a dog that's not too determined. Myself I am stubborn as a mule, but Marit needs something less stubborn. This makes the puppy training class very important, I want the dog to know its place. A dog that knows its place is a happy dog. I'll keep you posted, most likely I'll ask for an advice or two too. He seems to be taking after his sire, so we are anticipating a 55kg dog who is close to 70cm at the shoulder. He's going to be a big guy. > > Me and Marit was at an expedition or show or whatever you call it, to get > to > know the breed a bit better. If they are well socialized, they are a very friendly dog, but they need to have lots of good experiences with people, from a few eeks of age to past a year. They do their formative socializing (all dogs actually) from about 4 months to a year of age, so you really want to inflict your puppy on as many people as you can. They are also a very determined animal, so you need to be more determined. > > Now the only problem is to raise the founds needed. Good stuff is expensive, a "cheap" dog can cost you more than you can imagine. > > Anyway, some day in pretty near future we will be enabled. When you choose a dog, send me the pedigree, I'd be interested in having a look at what you are getting.
