I have an original promotional brochure that Pentax used with the MX. It 
explains that mirror lock up was not provided because the MX has an 
air-damped mirror shock absorption system that reduces the vibrations to a 
level below what might normally be expected. They provide a vibration 
comparison chart which suggests that the MX suffers less vibration than 
"other" SLRs. But they also say that if you watch what happens, you will 
notice that most of the vibration is caused by the mirror return after the 
exposure, not as the mirror lifts prior to the exposure.

That's it - make of it what you will - advertising hype or the full story?

If you can tell how much vibration there is by eye during a 1/500 exposure, 
you will be doing better than me!
