If you are doing any fiddling with colour settings prior to hitting print, 
then you are profiling your system.
I've been using the profiles that came with my printer, but on my last 
printer, I was creating my own.
It isn't difficult, and is a good way to get consistent results.
A friend of mine can't be bothered with all this, and does lovely prints.
He has his monitor set up with Adobe Gamma, and knows how much he needs to 
bias his colour balance in Photoshop prior to printing.
I automated this part of his workflow by suggesting that he could write an 
action to bias the colour.
