In the early 70's I was a volunteer wrench for a guy racing a Lotus Elan in SCCA. Later the guy I found to work on my own cars (I had a string of Porsche 912's) was an active racer with a Spitfire. I did some serious research, found I could campaign in the formula V or formula Ford for $8-10k per year and gave it a lot of thought. Got involved in rock climbing instead, and probably spent close to that much in my travels. The highlight of my spectating career was at a CanAm at Watkins glen in the early-mid 70's. Donahue was awesome! My cousin was part of the track's volunteer medical staff, she gave my then wife and me Unlimited Access passes. We could go absolutely anywhere on the course. I didn't get any good racing shots, but I got a number of good shots of the babes hanging around the racers in the pits and the garage. Downside of the weekend - we camped too close to the mud pit and didn't get much sleep. (An area where inebriated drivers take turns, usually, driving through a deep pit filled with mud. Great hilarity all around when someone gets stuck. Usually one or two permanently stuck vehicles by the end of the night.) Had our tent knocked down the second night by a Harley ridden by someone who was well over the legal limit...
