Someone wants to pay me for a non-eBay item with Paypal. I set up an
account with PP. Does all the buyer need to know is my eMail address? He
sends the $$ to the email address, PP notifies me, and then I can use the
money to, for example, pay my eBay bill, or buy things, or to pay other
people. Is this pretty much the way it works? Anything else I should know?

Yes, that's it. The email address you use at PayPal. Pretty simple really.
PayPal may hold it until you approve it, so once you know it's there double
check back on your account screen and say you approve it being "deposited" to
your account. I think they tend to do this when it is not for an item purchase
on ebay (but not positive). I do know they do it when it is a "buyer" that
is unknown to PayPal.

Personally, I never leave money at PayPal as soon as it is there, I transfer
it to a real life bank account.
