Godfrey, the Manfrotto that I mentioned is sold without any additions
(no head, no quick release) for $85 here.

I may have to buy a quick release and a head, but probably later.
Alternatively I could try to dismount the head and quick release from
the Slik tripod that I have and attach it to the monopod, though it then
will be ugly and bulky ;-). I do want a ball head though ;-).

I have a Manfrotto I've been using for about two years off and on. It just
has a quick release plate. Try it without a head first, you may find you don't
need one. It is very easy to tilt and turn a monopod into position. I used
it extensively in Yosemite when I was shooting with some fairly heavy lenses
and wanted sharp pictures. Much easier than lugging a tripod around. Now I
really only use my Velbon tripod for taking shots of stuff for ebay. Oh, also
I
used it when I shot Mom's hands, and if I ever did any portrait work I'd use
it for that. But out in the field a monopod seems quite sufficient for most
of my needs.
