I actually exchanged the first one I had too (due to a more serious
intermittent fault than slightly out of focus slides) but both scanners I
tried scanned slides slightly soft.  I don't think it is an adjustment
problem but more a case of it simply being a 'cheap and cheerful' piece of
equipment (as they say: 'you get what you pay for').  The good thing is it
scans prints sharply and at least has the ability to can scan slides and
negatives if necessary.  Also since exchanging the first faulty one it has
given over a year of unfailing service (touch wood) so on balance I am happy
with it.
