That's not surprising.  You were almost certainly putting
extra stress on it to avoid using the bad knee; when you
stop doing that it feels much better.

My wife has a scar closer to 12" than your 5" one, but
her doctor took the opportunity to straighten up the
angle of the joint as well.  He's also a specialist in
this kind of operation - he learned his trade at Walter
Reed, where they do quite a lot of reconstructive surgery.
