I think you've got to take into account the three distinct levels of
permutations (entry/prosumer/professional) within those releases, and
even then there are two sub-levels within the professional range (1.3
and full frame). In the 1.3 crop range (that I went for) there have only
been 3 releases: 

1D                   late 2001
1D mark II      mid 2004
1D mark III     mid 2007

That's a bit less than three years per 'upgrade'.
