to me it sounds like CPU overheating. Most of the recent CPUs have temperature sensors built in and when temperature reaches some critical value they turn off themselves to prevent damage. Check the CPU fan or try monitoring the CPU temperature using some tool such as SpeedFan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php.
