I've been using a Hakuba Camera Grip LH with all my cameras for
several years now, I like a grip more than a neckstrap. But it's a
bit of a PITA when I use a tripod as I have to remove the base unit
and fit the tripod QR adapter plate in its place. I also have to
loosen it and swing it out of the way when it's time to change the
battery.
I've thought for some time to have a machinist friend make me base
plates for the hand strap that would also incorporate an Arca-Swiss
and a Manfrotto RC2 adapter plate, and clear the battery door.
Thought there might be a market for such a little custom specialty
bit. It would take some time and money to prototype them which is why
I have procrastinated on getting to it. ;-)
Well, the other day on DPReview.com, someone mentioned a product like
this already in the market called the Camdapter ...
http://www.camdapter.com/
Since he didn't list the Pentax K10D, I took some dimensions and sent
a note to the person running Camdapter, James Garavuso. He emailed
back promptly and told me that both the Manfrotto RC2 and Arca-Swiss
adapters would fit and clear the battery door, for both K10D and K10D
with battery grip in place. I ordered the Manfrotto adapter and a strap.
They arrived today. The machining work on the adapter is nicely done,
and it fits well as stated. It clears the battery door and is thinner
than the Hakuba grip adapter, the camera sits more stably on a table
with it. It snaps cleanly into all my Manfrotto RC2 equipped tripod
clamps. The leather grip is very nicely made and feels great. The
adapter is supplied with a nicely finished securing allen-head bolt
and allen key too. And you can fit a neck strap from a lug on the
opposite side of the adapter and camera, enabling you to have both as
desired.
Not cheap ... adapter and strap were about $65 ... but if you use a
hand strap and a tripod as much as I do this is a very convenient
accessory that works and saves time. And is nicely made as well.
