I think that's the answer, Rob. I have seen some tests with the K10D and the 645 version of the 400mm f5.6 IF ED lens and it suffers from purple fringing, too. I suppose most long lenses wide open shooting birds in trees against the sky are going to show this weekness. ED glass alone obviously doesn't seem to fix this problem, at least on digital bodies. I've heard some claim that APO will help in this regard.
