You are right, of course, Godfrey. But rangefinders are a kind of ancient history - pre SLR equipment. It's amazin what Leitz will do, to keep it selling. The polarizing filter for instance. You can't see throught the lens, so Leitz have enginered a filter, that will swing up in front of the veiwfinder - so you can see how it will work. Before you release the camera, you swing it back to cover the lens the lens - a turn of exactly 180 degrees. Same effect. Quite clever, realy - but very cumbersome compared to a DSLR, isn't it? This polarizer comes at a price of 500 USD. That's pricey, that's Leitz!
I use rangefinders for fun - for street photography - for black and white. If I'm going to take pictures, that I must sell or use, I'll certainly bring an SLR. Thinking a little more on this and reading the sentiments posted after mine ... I know a lot of Leica owners. Many are wealthy lawyers and doctors who hobby in photography, that's true. But many are also very talented and passionate photographers who use their Leica equipment, much as I did. A number are also professionals. Just because the equipment they prefer is very high priced doesn't mean that they're just posh jerks looking for a status symbol. Hasselblads are also very expensive and lots of wealthy doctors and lawyers own them, but they're also the most commonly used medium format camera in the professional world. I find it sad to see photographic enthusiasts belittling other photographers and photographic enthusiasts just because they like/have/use an expensive camera. It smacks of envy and bigotry. I'm still waiting to see what the Sigma DP-1 is like when it becomes available as I think that will satisfy the yen I have for a compact camera in the line of the Leica M8 or Epson RD-1.
