Well I would never put it that way.  I have
been a home entertainment/home theater fan for over 25 years, had LP,
VHS, Laserdisc, CD, DVD most soon after release and bought
many many titles for repeat viewing/listening only. I dont
buy stuff I have never seen or heard or dont want to 
watch/listen to over and over again. Buying is not wasting
money, this is paying a small fee for
good home entertainment the way I see it.
Buying new or used doesnt matter, but its
certainly not the same as renting and it's worth more
to buy/own then to rent only for things you want to enjoy
repeatedly and on demand, not having to "go get"
a rental. IMHO.

I've never bought a tape for the VHS either - only own about 20 CD's I
see no need to own things like that.  The only things I buy retail are
paper products and groceries, pretty much.  But even if I had money I
wouldn't buy anything new if I could avoid it.
