I have those setting now too.

At one point I did enable 'automatic XMP' updates and I experienced
quite slow responses, perhaps mostly due to 'touching' DNG's that
had been changed before and got the XMP info updated but
quite annoying anyway.

However, I guess it does mean that I need to 'export' DNG's if I want 
to use them elsewhere and retain any settings right ?

Have you done that sofar, or are you just using that single system ?


Just copying the DNG from the filesystem woyld be the version as 
original imported by Lightroom I guess (converted from camera PEF).
