A hybrid / fitness bike might be better for your needs. I don't know that a road bike would be very happy pulling a trailer, but a hybrid is a pretty good all-rounder.
An effective daily workout on a bike is going to involve quite a lot of miles - about 15-20 per workout, I should think.
