[Thoughts on Mike J.'s comments on possible future digital SLRs] Illuminating as ever, Mike, and the point that there is no law of nature that favours a 36x24mm frame is a fair one. However, if Pentax is to move to a smaller-frame digital SLR, while still maintaining compatibility with the lenses we all value so highly, there's some work to do in the area of wideangles.
One friend has recently bought a Canon D30. He lives in the US, uses it mainly to photograph baseball and is delighted that it gives him magnification equivalent to 320mm from a 200mm lens. Many of us though, me included, take more 'wide' pictures than 'long' ones, and don't relish the idea of paying a four-figure sum for a 15mm just to get the width we're used to from 24mm. So I have a suggestion. Assuming for the moment that Pentax does decide to take the smaller-CCD route and make something like the D30, how about adding a couple of 'digital-only' wideangles - say 12mm and 16mm? These could be made more cheaply than lenses that have to cover the full 36x24mm, and could have an extra prong on the mount to keep them from being inadvertently attached to a film body. I think I'd buy one. Would anyone else? Clive Williams - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
