Hi,

Regarding the 500/4.5 from Pentax. I have the lens (there is one for sale in
the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied
regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never managed to
get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every image clear
purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely. Although a long, big
lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me get the shots I want, it
is probably not the best in the (price)range. I have no experience with the
400/5.6 though...

Just wanted to share my experiences.

Regards,

Kamiel Wanrooij

Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup.

OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax
AF mount (B&H lists it as "New, Arriving Soon). If I understand, this is
a new design that replaces the previous 500 f/4.5 which Sigma had
stopped offering in Pentax mount.

I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens,
especially compared against similar lenses at higher price ... so if the
DG lenses are improved beyond that, they ought to be very good indeed.
