Well, I'm not the caliber photographer of the other respondents, and I'm kinda cheap and lazy, so...
I only use grey grads and polarizers, and those rarely (hard to find a grey grad shaped to fit mountain peaks, I've noticed). I have a pretty good Hoya polarizer, but the grads are Cokin. I find the holders a real pain, so I use a couple of small strips of gaffer tape to attach them to the lens. Quick, easy, no vignetting, and no fussing with step-up rings.
