Length of warranty does not have much to do with it, except that you can exchange it if it goes out, but most defective drives will fail in that first year anyway. At one time WD were junky, but they got better. The two 40 gig WD's I have which are now, what, maybe 6-7 years old have never had a glitch. And, nowadays, Western Digital is owned by Seagate anyway and I expect them to do away with the name soon as they have done with all the other drive companies they have bought out over the years.
Anyway, my point is that all the drives at a given price point are about the same quality now. I am not even sure that the expensive enterprise server class drives are that much better quality. Robotic construction is the reason. However no one does much in the way of testing; they all seem to use their customers as final quality control testers.
