The RAW converter  that comes with PSCS3 is far superior to the Pentax version. 
In general, you'll use "exposure" to adjust highlights, "shadow" to set the 
black point and "brightness" to control mid range brightness. "Contrast" will 
stretch or compress the curve. "Temperature" and "Tint" will allow you to set 
light temperature to your liking. Most photographers prefer to sharpen in 
photoshop after converting the file to tiff. But, as Godders noted previously, 
the best primer is Bruce Fraser's book, which is PhotoShop specific.
