The meter circuitry seems to be the weak point of the KX: I've been through several with dead meters. I never completed troubleshooting to 100% certainty, but it seems very likely that the culprit is the integrated circuit that comprises the most of the meter electronics. I never determined exactly what the chip is but it's an 8-pin SOIC and most likely is a dual op-amp or comparator, so if you could determine the pinout, finding a suitable replacement shouldn't be too difficult (though soldering it onto the flexible "circuit board" might be another story).
