I read the 'Flags of our fathers" book on the way to New Zealand/Australia last fall. I believe it was the basis for the Clint Eastwood directed movie of the same name. It was written by the son of an undertaker/funeral home director from central Wisconsin (Appelton?). He raised a family of 6 and never spoke about the flag raising after the original publicity tour they sent him on to raise money to pay for the war. His son only came to know about it because of his curosity about the medals he discovered in an old box in the spare room of his dad's office. Annually on the anniversary of the event, the media would call looking for his comments. The family was instructed to tell them he had gone fishing and couldn't be reached. He shunned all publicity after the initial war bond tours. The 3 who came home to do the war bond tours survived. I believe the others died in later actions. It was a story that touched me as my dad was in the army preparing to invade Japan. Regards, Bob S.
