Sandy, this can be tough shooting under such fast changing conditions. You might have ridden an adjoining "horse" and tried for some expressive close ups. If you are moving at the same speed, you can use a slower shutter to emphasize background movement and maybe catch some gleeful expressions of the riders. A medium zoom lens might be a good choice.
