It's a decent lens that is rated only a little less than the more expensive
17-35/2.8-4.

Replying to myself!
I shot the last few frames of a roll this morning with the new lens: I'm
impressed!
Sharpness is very good to excellent, even at f4.5 at the 18mm end. With the
MZ-S, the last frame, taken at f8 in Aperture Priority mode looks a tad
(1/2-stop) over-exposed on the print, but that could be the mini-lab's
vagaries: the negs look consistent. Severe shadow problem with the built-in
flash at 18mm with the supplied lens hood on, may have to go without that or
use the AF330FTZ instead.

Some barrel distortion at the wide end again, and using a lens of this focal
length requires some concentration on the verticals! This is the first time
I've used such an extreme wide-angle, so I'll have to watch it.

Overall, I don't think I bought a lemon!
