I'd agree with those recommendations.
I started out with a Spotmatic II, but would have much preferred
a Spotmatic F; open-aperture metering is a very nice feature.
I never had any of the earlier K mounts; I started with an MX
(which I still have). In the intervening years I've owned an ME
(too automatic), an ME Super, a Super Program, a PZ-1p and an MZ-S.
About the only one of those that I wouldn't recommend for all-around
photography is the ME - the rest are all classics in their own way:
MX Small, simple, full manual camera
(capable of 5fps with the optional motor drive!)
ME Super Last of the cameras that work without batteries
Super Program The high point of the manual focus bodies
PZ-1p 4.3fps, 1/8000 shutter speed; excellent for flash.
Introduced the two-wheel hyper program interface
that was also used in the *ist-D and K10D.
MZ-S The last, and best, of the MZ bodies.
