The only real advantage to modern flash systems is wireless TTL flash with 
multiple units. And only Nikon has really nailed that, with CLS/i-TTL. Canon 
has the multiple flash groups, but otherwise is worse than Pentax if anything. 
Not sure about Sony/Minolta, although I know they've had wireless TTL forever.

I prefer manual or auto flash for most situations.
