I've seen them called Meerkats, and you're right, they are cute as hell!  I know 
they're from Africa.  Maybe Oz as well, unless Darren caught them at a zoo.

Did you ever see the Disney's the Lion King?  Remember the comic characters Timon and 
Pumba?  One of them was a warthog (or something like that), the other was a meerkat.

They're about the size of a small housecat (well, small compared to MY housecat!), and 
they're social animals that live in colonies.  When they're resting or relaxing, one 
or two of them "stand
guard" like the ones in Darren's pic.  I've got a wonderful pic taken at the Toronto 
Zoo of a bunch of them relaxing, with one standing watch, looking directly at my 
camera - Lord knows where
that print is now.

Anyway, that's what I know about meer cats, or meerkats, or whatever the heck they're 
called.
