LOL! It is a remarkable site, isn't it? (From many standpoints.) Sort 
of like the work of someone with bipolar disorder during a "manic" 
phase. Still, despite its "eccentricities it has some good information.

Yes, it was very common. Still happens a ittle today: The Cosina 100mm 
f/3.5 macro is sold by Cosina, Vivitar, Phoenix and Pentax (it's the 
only Pentax lens since the 28-200 that isn't made by Pentax).

There *are* some really good third-party lenses out there. The old, 
manual-focus Vivitar Series 1 line had some real gems.
