dust gets trapped between the focusing screen and prism occasionally  
on any SLR. Unless the focusing screen is user-removable, you live  
with it or you send the camera in for a CLA.

One of my FM bodies suffered being smacked into a railroad tie in  
1982. This dented the top plate and cracked the focusing screen on  
one side, but it still worked perfectly and was in perfect alignment.  
At the time I didn't have the money for a repair (about $200) and,  
besides, I had only paid $85 for the body. So I just kept using it,  
got used to seeing it that way. Dust and such accumulated over the  
years.

Seventeen years later, I had a new top cover and screen installed, a  
cleaning done, and it became new again. The camera was perfect when I  
sold it in 2000.
